MA Development Economics

The MA Course in Developmental Economics was started in the academic year 2020-21 as a new generation course in the aided stream. The Master of Arts program in Development Economics is designed for students who wish to prepare themselves for careers in the field of economics as development economists, policy designers and planners to improve their knowledge of economic theory and its applications. 

Programme Overview 

There are 17 core courses and 3 groups of electives with the option to choose any three courses from one group. The elective courses mainly aim to provide specialization in various economics courses such as applied mathematics and subjects pertaining to development economics like micro level planning, agriculture development, economics of education, health and infrastructure. Course evaluation consists of seminar presentations, assignments, written examinations, project and viva-voce. 

Career Opportunities

Postgraduate students in Economics can appear for the Indian Economic Services examination conducted by UPSC. They can also take up other UPSC Exams and can get opportunities in the Niti Ayog, National Sample Survey, Ministry of Economic Affairs and other relevant government departments. Economics students can appear for UGC-NET. By clearing this qualifying exam, the candidates can be eligible to become Assistant Professors and for Junior Research Fellowship in recognized Indian universities. Students with an adequate qualification in Economics can get opportunities in different banks. They can work as Development Officers, Clerks, Economic Advisors and other managerial positions. The prominent international agencies such as the World Bank, International Labour Organization and several NGOs require economists at different levels. The candidates with a qualification in Economics and a relevant additional qualification can work as tax consultants, investment consultants for insurance, mutual funds, share trading, commodity market and so on. The candidates with a specialization in agricultural economics or environmental economics can get research opportunities.
