Department of Physics

The Department of Physics was founded in 1965 as the college also began its momentous journey that very year. The department was raised to a full-fledged one in 1981 when it began to offer a B.Sc. Physics main degree course with Chemistry and Mathematics as complementary courses. An M.Sc. degree course with Electronics as specialisation was also started in 1999. Later the specialisation was changed to Material science in 2012. In 2001, a UGC sponsored Model III degree course, Electronic Equipment Maintenance [EEM], was launched under the Physics Department. As of now, there are seven faculty members in the department, three are Ph.D. holders. The remaining members are working earnestly towards their doctoral degree.

In 2018, the department was upgraded as a research department, with Dr. Jochan Joseph and Dr. Lakshmi Vijayan serving as research guides. The department is well-equipped with necessary facilities and resources for teaching, higher learning and research, under the financial support that comes from the DST FIST programme. Aloysian Instrumentation Centre and Research Centre functioning under the department ensures that every student receives proper guidance and resources to take his/her research works further. This facility is also open to students from the outside. Almost 1000 books, 13 journals and periodicals are available in the department library. Every year the department conducts Sky Watching programmes under the leadership of the Astronomy club. The annual meeting of our alumni forum – Diamond Dual, is conducted on the second Saturday of February.

The department hosts a wide spectrum of national/regional level invited lectures and seminars by renowned resource persons based on relevant topics in the field of physics. Inter and intra departmental competitions like Essay writing, Poster Designing and Lecture Series are organised every year to help the overall skill enhancement of the students. Alumnae lectures and peer group lectures add momentum to the progress of the students. In fond memory of late Prof. Sabu Jacob, the department conducts Prof. Sabu Jacob Memorial All Kerala Intercollegiate Science Quiz competition every year. Best Orator is selected from the Elocution Competition instituted by our Retd. Faculty Dr. Varghese Mathew. There are 16 endowments instituted by the former faculty and well-wishers for outstanding students.
