B.Sc. Zoology Model II Aquaculture

The Department of Zoology was established in 1988. The Department offers a Model II Undergraduate Course in Zoology with Aquaculture as the Vocational subject. The maximum sanctioned strength in this programme is 24.  Since the College is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam, the course follows Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) as designed by the University. The Department is supported by DST-FIST and has a well-established Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratories, Practical Labs, Zoology Museum, Ornamental Fish Hatchery Unit etc.

Programme Overview

This programme covers Zoology as the Core subject, Chemistry as the Complementary subject and Aquaculture as the Vocational subject in addition to English and a Second Language (either Hindi or Malayalam). Though it is a model II programme, its Core Zoology and Complementary Chemistry courses are same as that of Zoology Model I programme of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Nevertheless, this programme differs from Model I Zoology of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam by having an Aquaculture as the Vocational subject instead of Botany as the Complementary subject

Upon successful completion of B.Sc. Zoology Model II Aquaculture programme, an interested candidate will get several options for higher education depending on his/her area of interest. He/She can go for Postgraduate courses like M.Sc. Zoology or M.Sc. Aquaculture or M.Sc. Industrial Fisheries or M.Sc. Marine Biology or other Life Science related courses like M.Sc. Environmental Sciences, M.Sc. Physiology, M.Sc. Microbiology, M.Sc. Biochemistry, M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Sc. Human Genetics, M.Sc. Biostatistics etc. A candidate with a Master’s Degree in any of the relevant fields of Zoology can find career opportunities in Environmental consultancies, in hospitals, forensic labs, food manufacturing units, in aquaculture and animal nutrition companies, in research and development firms, in schools and colleges/higher education institutions etc.
