Debating Club

Annual Report of Debating and Elocution Club

2017-18

Debates are effective ways of weighing the pros and cons of concepts and events. Participating in debates enables students to express their views effectively and to respond cogently to arguments with which they disagree. In addition, debate students are often the most well-read and well informed in their grade level. In debate, the preparation and delivery of argument provides students to think critically, develop their academic research skills, improve their communication abilities, solve problems creatively and increase their self-confidence. Mrs Kochuthresiamma Joseph (Head of the Dept of Mathematics) and Ms. Gem Cherian (Asst Professor, Dept of English) serve as the co-ordinators.

The club was able to spot many orators as well as debaters, to give them sufficient training and send them to participate in various inter-collegiate elocution, debate and essay writing competitions. This year, the club conducted the 53rd A.D. Sheroff Memorial Elocution Competitions in English and Malayalam for the students of this college on 27 h September 2016. Ms. Manupriya M Pillai (III B.Sc. Maths), Ms. Christy Ann Biji (III B.Sc Chemistry) and Ms. Sandra Thomas (III B.Sc Zoology) won the first, second and third prizes respectively in the English Elocution competition. Ms. Angel Sebastian (I B.Com Tax), Ms. Dona Anna Mathew (III B. Com Tax) and Ms. Sariga M. S. (I B.Sc Maths) won the first, second and third prizes in the Malayalam Elocution competition.

The Club was able to send students for competitions outside the campus and they brought laurels to the institution with their outstanding performances. In the various competitions conducted in association with the 64 th Co-operative Week Celebrations at Mancombu, Ms Angel Sebastian (I B. Com Tax) and Mr. Joseph Xavier (I M. Com) won the first and second prizes respectively in Elocution competition and Ms Tinu V Tom (I B.Sc Maths) and Janet Jose (I B. In short the Debating and Elocution Club plays a major role in moulding the personality of the students and helps them to win prizes including cash awards and thereby helping them to ‘earn while they learn’ with their inborn talents.
