Achievements

The Department of Physical Education takes pride in the fact that 3 of our alumni are Arjuna awardees.

Mr. Sebastian Xavier – Sebastian Xavier was the fastest swimmer of India for more than a decade. He held the national record of 22.89 seconds in 50 meters freestyle swimming for 11 years from 1998 to 2009. He represented India in the 1996 Olympic Games at Atlanta, in two Asian Games and in several South Asian Games. Sebastian won 36 gold medals at the SAF Games, SAF Championships and Asia Pacific meets and 66 gold medals in the national meets. He received the Arjuna Award in 2001.

Mr. Saji Thomas – Saji Thomas is a rower. He was a participant in three Asian Games and World championships. His teams won 13 medals in various international competitions. He won medals in all main boat classes of both sweep rowing and sculling in major regattas, the only Indian with this achievement. He received the Arjuna Award in 2014.

Mr. Johnson Varghese – Johnson Varghese is an Indian amateur boxer who participated in the Super Heavyweight (+91 kg) division. He won the bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth games losing to David Price, who arose from three knockdowns to stop Johnson, held in Melbourne. He also, won the bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games in Super Heavyweight against Kazakhstan’s Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov, held at Aspire Hall 5 in Doha, Qatar. He received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2008.

The department also takes pride in many other alumni who brought laurels to the department and the college. Surfing champion and Olympian Mr. Rocha C Mathew is one such proud alumni of the college.
